Some seasons of life require flexibility—and this maternity session was a beautiful example of how allowing space for change can lead to something truly special.

Makayla and Brandon’s maternity session took place at their parents’ horse farm in Powhatan, a location that holds deep meaning for their family. We had been planning their session for several weeks, adjusting along the way as winter weather shifted plans. That kind of flexibility is something I fully embrace—life happens, seasons change, and sometimes waiting allows us to tell the story in a more meaningful way.
When everything finally aligned, we were gifted the most stunning winter afternoon. There was still snow on the ground, preserving a snapshot of this moment in time, while the light wrapped everything in a soft, golden glow. It felt peaceful, intentional, and perfectly suited to documenting this chapter of their lives.

I first met Makayla a few months earlier during another family’s portrait session in Goochland—also with a horse involved—which made it especially fitting that her own maternity session would include such an important part of her world. For this session, Makayla and Brandon chose to include two of their horses, Stanley and Voyager. Their presence added so much depth and authenticity, reflecting not just where they are in life, but what matters most to them.
What I love about maternity sessions is that no two need to look the same. Some couples choose meaningful locations, others bring along pets or animals that are part of their everyday lives, and some simply want a quiet walk with beautiful light. Makayla and Brandon’s session was a perfect reminder that maternity photography doesn’t have to follow a formula—it can be shaped around your story, your season, and the things that make your journey unique.

Add in the way these two laugh together, move so naturally with one another, and truly enjoy each other’s company, and the result was a session that felt honest, joyful, and deeply personal. The combination of place, timing, and connection came together effortlessly, creating images that reflect not just what this season looks like—but what it feels like.

If you’re expecting and dreaming of a maternity session that reflects who you are and what matters most to you, I’d love to help you create something meaningful. Whether that means a favorite place, a family farm, beloved animals, or simply beautiful light and space to connect, your session can be as unique as your story. Reach out when you’re ready—I’d be honored to document this season for you. www.amandamilesphotography.com/maternity-info.
